Microsoft Edge Slow to Open on Windows 11? Here Is What to Try

Laptop on a busy kitchen table beside homework and tea, the scene where microsoft edge slow to open slows the evening

A dozen tabs are open, a video call is running and someone needs homework help. You click a link in an email, and then you wait. If Microsoft Edge slow to open is the snag you keep hitting on a busy PC, Microsoft just shipped a change aimed squarely at that moment.

On October 29, 2026, the Edge team said the browser now supports a new Windows feature called accelerated app launches. Microsoft puts the gain at about 15% faster launches for most people, and up to 33% when the PC is juggling lots of work. The catch: Windows 11 and Edge both need to be new enough.

Why Microsoft Edge slow to open happens on a busy PC

Edge is often already running before you ever click its icon. A window might be minimized, or a feature called startup boost might be keeping a few pieces of the browser alive in the background. Until now, every new launch went through a go-between process that checked whether Edge was running before handing over your link.

On a freshly started computer, that hunt is quick. With lots of apps fighting for attention, it can add the lag that makes Edge feel like it takes forever to open. According to the Microsoft Edge blog, the new approach has Edge register itself with Windows when it starts. The next time you open it, Windows skips the go-between and hands the launch straight to the running browser.

Which PCs get the faster launch

If Microsoft Edge slow to open is your daily gripe, check these three requirements first. You need all of them:

RequirementWhat Microsoft lists
Windows versionWindows 11 version 25H2, 26H1 or 26H2
Windows updateKB5127936 (the October 2026 non-security update) or later
Browser versionEdge 150 or later

The faster path works when you start Edge from the Start menu or the taskbar, and when you click a supported link that opens in Edge by default. Windows 10 is not on the list.

Things to try, easiest first

  1. Update Edge. Check the version number in Edge’s settings and let it install anything waiting. Versions below 150 miss the new launch path.
  2. Install the October preview update. Open Windows Update and look for KB5127936. Microsoft calls it the October 2026 non-security update, and any later release also counts. If your PC is still on an older Windows 11 release, our guide on getting the Windows 11 26H2 update walks through the upgrade.
  3. Turn on startup boost. Type edge://settings/system/manageSystem into the address bar and flip the startup boost switch on. It keeps a light version of Edge ready in the background after you close it.
  4. Check your extensions. Microsoft says startup boost switches itself off if you have an extension that opens a browser window when none is running. Disable extensions one at a time and recheck the setting.
  5. Launch Edge the supported ways. Use the taskbar, the Start menu or a link that opens in Edge by default, since those are the routes that get the speedup.
  6. Restart the PC. After a big update, restart before judging whether Microsoft Edge slow to open is still a problem.

Who gets startup boost turned on automatically

According to its startup boost support page, Microsoft switches the feature on by itself for Windows PCs that have over 4GB of memory, or more than 1GB plus a modern drive such as an SSD. Edge also needs to be used every few days, with no conflicting extensions installed. Otherwise, switch it on by hand.

When the update is not the fix

If you have every piece in place and Microsoft Edge slow to open still describes your mornings, the cause may sit elsewhere. Our explainer on why older Windows 11 PCs can feel faster with the 8GB RAM update covers that side of the story.

Microsoft’s announcement does not mention a switch for accelerated app launches, or a way to confirm it is active on your PC. The best measure is your own: if links open faster than they did last week, it is working. If not, press Alt+Shift+I in Edge to send feedback straight to the team.

What Microsoft has said about next steps

The Edge team says it is working with the Windows team to bring the same speedup to other situations, such as opening PDF files. It is also sharing the work with Chromium, the open-source project behind Edge, so other Chromium-based browsers could pick it up down the road. Microsoft has not given dates for either, but anyone who finds Microsoft Edge slow to open PDFs from email will welcome the first part.

Frequently asked questions

Should Microsoft Edge startup boost be on or off?

On, for most home PCs. Microsoft says it adds no load while Edge windows are open and only a little while the browser is closed.

Why is Microsoft Edge slow to open on Windows 10?

Windows 10 is not on Microsoft’s list for accelerated app launches, which needs Windows 11 version 25H2, 26H1 or 26H2. Startup boost is still worth checking on Windows 10.

Does the faster launch help Chrome too?

Not yet. Microsoft says it is contributing the work to Chromium so other browsers can benefit in the future, but it has not said when.

Is fixing Microsoft Edge slow to open worth your time today?

If you live in Edge on a Windows 11 PC and you are tired of watching it wake up, install the October update and turn on startup boost this weekend. If you mostly use another browser or you are still on Windows 10, there is nothing here to chase yet. A few seconds saved on every link adds up faster than you would think.
