YouTube Keeps Exiting Full Screen on Your Phone? Here Is What to Try

Phone on a stand in a dim living room playing a video, the kind of viewing that stops when youtube keeps exiting full screen

If YouTube keeps exiting full screen on your phone and the sound dies along with it, you can stop blaming the phone. That bedtime cartoon or long recipe video is getting cut off by what looks like a problem in the app itself, and changing your phone’s settings probably will not help much.

Android and iPhone users have been reporting the same glitch since early October. As of November 3, Google has not publicly confirmed it or given a date for a fix, so everything below is a workaround rather than a cure. The first two only take a moment.

What happens when YouTube keeps exiting full screen

The pattern is oddly specific. A video is playing normally across the whole screen, nobody touches anything, and it suddenly drops into the small floating mini player at the same moment the audio stops.

Expanding the video again does not solve it. The picture returns to full size, but it carries on in silence, which makes it easy to blame your volume buttons or earbuds.

This is different from YouTube simply leaving full screen because of a stray thumb. If a toddler is holding the phone, an accidental swipe is still worth ruling out. If the phone is sitting on a stand and YouTube keeps exiting full screen anyway, and the sound goes too, you are likely looking at this bug.

Which phones are affected so far

Reports that YouTube keeps exiting full screen have come from different Android phones and from iPhones, and that spread is the strongest clue we have. A single bad touchscreen would not show up across two operating systems at once, so the app is the likely culprit, though Google has not said so.

What remains unknown is just as useful to spell out. Google has not said how many people are affected, which app versions are involved, or what triggers the glitch. The reports we have seen describe the phone app, so a TV or computer may behave normally, but nobody has confirmed that either.

Five workarounds to try, easiest first

Start at the top and stop when the sound comes back. Results vary from one phone to the next, so a step that helped a neighbor may do nothing for you.

  1. Restart the video. Close it entirely, then open it again from your history or the channel page. For some people, this alone restores the audio, though not for everyone.
  2. Force the whole app closed. Swipe YouTube out of your recent apps, then reopen it. Others found this was the only thing that worked when restarting the video did nothing.
  3. Check the boring sound settings. YouTube’s own troubleshooting page suggests confirming the volume is on and looking through your device’s sound settings. It takes a moment and rules out a muted phone.
  4. Update the app. On Android, open the Play Store, tap your profile picture, choose Manage apps & device, then Updates available. Google’s update steps also note that a restart is sometimes needed. On iPhone, look in the App Store.
  5. Reboot, then report it. Restart the phone, and if YouTube keeps exiting full screen afterward, use Help and feedback inside the app to tell Google. Mention your phone model and app version so engineers have something to work with.

One thing we would skip for now is the full teardown. One affected user went through clearing the cache, uninstalling and reinstalling app updates, force-stopping, rebooting, adjusting playback options and resetting app preferences, only to see the problem return. Other Android app glitches, like the Gboard shift key problem, have their own set of steps. Here, the odds of a deep clean paying off look poor.

When to wait for a fix, and what Google has said

So far, the honest answer is nothing. We could not find a public statement from Google or the TeamYouTube support account as of November 3, and YouTube’s troubleshooting page does not mention this glitch. Whenever a repair arrives, it will most likely come as an app update or a quiet change on YouTube’s side, so there is no setting to hunt for in the meantime.

If YouTube keeps exiting full screen during family movie time, try moving the show to a bigger screen for now. A streaming box like the one in our Google TV Streamer guide for families is one option, though we cannot promise it is immune.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my YouTube keep exiting full screen?

Most likely because of a bug in the app, not your phone. Users on Android and iPhone have reported videos dropping into the mini player and losing sound since early October, though Google has not confirmed a cause.

Does YouTube keep exiting full screen on iPad too?

We do not know yet. The reports we have seen focus on Android phones and iPhones, and Google has not said which devices are affected.

Will clearing the YouTube cache fix it?

Probably not. One affected user tried clearing the cache along with several deeper resets, and the problem still returned.

Should you keep troubleshooting or wait it out?

Wait it out, with one quick habit. When YouTube keeps exiting full screen, restart the video or close the app, keep it updated, and send one report so Google hears about it. Anyone tempted to reset the whole phone can skip it: with reports on two platforms, the phone looks like the wrong suspect.
