March 2027 is the date to circle if a Quest 2 lives in your house. Meta says the headset reaches the end of feature development with OS v213, which rolls out by then, and the Quest Pro stops at that same version. That is the Meta Quest 2 end of support milestone most families will feel, and the answer to “Will my kid’s headset stop working in April?” is no.
Security patches keep coming through the end of 2027, and games that run on the headset today are not being switched off. What ends first is new features. What ends later is protection, and that second date matters more than the first.
The Meta Quest 2 end of support dates, in order
Meta shared the Meta Quest 2 end of support plan in a notice to developers, so it reads more like a schedule than a farewell. Here is the short version.
| When | What happens | What it means at home |
|---|---|---|
| By March 2027 | OS v213 arrives as the last feature release | Install it, then expect no more new menus or tricks |
| After March 2027 | No new OS features for Quest 2 or Quest Pro | Titles that need a newer OS may skip these headsets |
| End of 2027 | Security updates stop | The headset gets riskier to keep online over time |
The Quest 2 launched in October 2020, so owners end up with roughly seven years of security patches in total. The Quest Pro, which runs an upgraded Snapdragon XR2+ chip, arrived in October 2022 and gets about two years fewer.
Is Quest 2 still supported after March?
Partly, and the split is easy to miss. The Meta Quest 2 end of support for features comes first, while security fixes run for roughly nine more months. Think of an older phone that stops getting big Android releases but still receives fixes for a while.
What happens to games and multiplayer
Games are the biggest worry around the Meta Quest 2 end of support, and the news here is good for any kid who plays with friends on newer headsets. Meta says cross-play is staying and Quest 2 players will not be locked out. A game that supports the headset keeps working unless it depends on an OS feature added after March 2027.
Studios that decide to drop the headset must also warn players six months ahead.
Even so, plan on a slow fade. Early 2028 looks like the point where new releases thin out for this hardware, which is our read of the calendar rather than a Meta promise.
What to do now if your family still uses one
Treat the Meta Quest 2 end of support as a slow countdown, not an emergency. A few small habits cover most of it.
- Keep installing updates. You want the headset to land on v213 and to pick up every security fix after it.
- Write down the games that matter. That six-month notice only helps if you know what to watch.
- Go easy on big new purchases for this headset. Check that a game is also meant for newer models.
- Skip paying much for a used one. A secondhand buyer today gets about a year of patches.
- Think about the end of 2027 as your real deadline. That is when staying online gets harder to justify.
If you do end up shopping, the Quest 3S and Quest 3 are the current follow-ups. Our older look at whether the Quest 3S is the best cheap mixed reality device is a decent starting point, though check current pricing on the Meta Store first.
What we don’t know yet
The Meta Quest 2 end of support notice is written for developers, so consumer questions are left hanging. We have not seen a trade-in or upgrade offer for Quest 2 owners, and we have not seen Meta spell out what happens to apps that are not games, such as streaming or fitness titles. We also have no firm word on how long your store library stays downloadable after 2027.
Frequently asked questions
Is Quest 2 shutting down?
No. Meta is ending new feature work with OS v213, not switching the headset off, and security updates continue through the end of 2027.
Will Quest 2 still work after 2027?
It should, since Meta says it is not blocking Quest 2 players. Security fixes will have stopped by then, though, and fewer new games are likely to support it.
Is Quest 2 still worth it in 2026?
Only at a low price and as a starter headset. With security updates ending in about a year, it no longer makes sense to pay much for one.
Should your family replace the Quest 2 yet?
Not yet. If the headset still gets played, the Meta Quest 2 end of support is no reason to spend money this holiday season, and most households can comfortably ride it out through 2027. Anyone who rarely puts it on can skip the drama entirely. Budget for a replacement when the patches stop, not when the features do.
