As of October 9, 2026, Microsoft’s support documentation confirms that Microsoft 365 Family storage is moving from a combined 6TB to a single 2TB pool. Today a household of six gets 1TB of OneDrive space per person. After the switch, everyone draws from one shared 2TB bucket, and the yearly price does not go down.
Nobody loses anything overnight. Current subscribers keep their space until the first renewal that lands on or after May 2, 2027. That gives families months to look at how much they actually store and decide whether the plan still makes sense.
How microsoft 365 family storage works after the switch
The old setup was simple: each of up to six people on the plan had a private 1TB OneDrive allowance. One person filling their space never touched anybody else’s.
Under the new model, Microsoft hands out space from the 2TB pool on demand. In Microsoft’s own words, “storage is allocated to users who need it automatically.” In practice, a teenager who backs up every phone video could eat into the room a parent needs for tax scans and family photos.
For small households this may barely register. Two adults who each use 300GB fit comfortably inside 2TB. A family of five or six with years of camera roll backups is a different story.
Which subscribers lose space, and when
The microsoft 365 family storage change also covers the Premium tier. Timing depends on whether you already pay for the plan.
| Subscriber | OneDrive space today | After the change | When it applies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Existing Family or Premium | 1TB per person, up to 6TB in total | 2TB shared pool | Your first renewal dated May 2, 2027 or later (an eligible plan change can bring it forward) |
| New subscribers | Not applicable | 2TB shared pool | Microsoft can apply it right away |
| Upgrading to Family or Premium | Depends on current plan | 2TB shared pool | Microsoft can apply it right away |
Microsoft 365 Family has a list price of $129.99 a year, a figure that already rose in January 2025. Nothing about that price changes with the storage cut, which is why many longtime subscribers are unhappy.
What to check before your next renewal
You have time, so use it. A few simple checks now can save a scramble in 2027.
- Find your renewal date. Sign in to your Microsoft account services page and note when the subscription renews. That date tells you when the new limit reaches your household.
- Add up what everyone uses. Ask each family member to check how much OneDrive space they fill. That combined number is what matters once microsoft 365 family storage becomes one pool. If it sits well under 2TB, you can probably relax.
- Hold off on plan changes. Microsoft says an eligible plan change can trigger the new model early. Until Microsoft explains what counts, avoid switching tiers or upgrading unless you need to.
- Clean out the obvious waste. Duplicate photo backups, old phone backups and forgotten video exports are usually the biggest space hogs.
- Price out alternatives. If your family stores well over 2TB, compare what other cloud storage services charge before your renewal arrives.
A common worry is whether renewing early locks in the old space for another year. That has not been confirmed, so do not count on it.
What Microsoft hasn’t explained yet
Several practical questions about the new microsoft 365 family storage rules are still open. The details published so far do not cover what happens to a family already storing more than 2TB when the switch arrives, whether files become read-only, or whether any grace period applies.
There is also no clear list of what counts as an eligible plan change. On the brighter side, the same Family and Premium plans are set to extend Copilot features to every linked family member, though no firm date has been given. If you are curious what Copilot can already do, our look at Copilot’s voice features is a good starting point.
Families weighing a move should look at the whole bundle, not just microsoft 365 family storage. The plan still includes the Office apps, and other services bundle their own AI tools and cloud space, as we covered when comparing ChatGPT Plus and Google Gemini.
Frequently asked questions
How does OneDrive family storage work after the change?
Everyone on the plan shares one 2TB pool. Microsoft assigns space automatically to whoever needs it, instead of giving each person a fixed 1TB.
Is microsoft 365 family storage changing for current subscribers right away?
No. Existing Family and Premium subscribers keep today’s space until they renew on May 2, 2027 or later. Making an eligible plan change before then can switch them sooner.
Does Microsoft 365 Family include Copilot?
Copilot features are being extended to all linked family members on the Family and Premium plans. No firm date has been announced for that rollout.
Should your family stay on Microsoft 365 Family?
If your household uses well under 2TB and relies on Word, Excel and Outlook, staying put is reasonable, since the reduced microsoft 365 family storage will probably never pinch. Heavy photo and video savers should start measuring now and shop around before their 2027 renewal. Either way, the space you pay for is shrinking, so it is worth knowing exactly what fills it.
