If there is still a Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro in your house, maybe handed down to a teenager or parked in a kitchen drawer as a backup, the update landing this week could be one of the last security fixes it ever gets. Google promised those two phones five years of support, and by the company’s own math, Pixel 6 updates end in October 2026.
The phone will not shut off or stop making calls. The change is quieter: once patches stop, newly found security holes stay open on that device for good.
What arrived in the October 2026 Pixel update
Google began pushing its October 2026 update to the Pixel 6 and every newer model this week, in stages that should reach all eligible phones over roughly seven days. On the Pixel 6 and 7 families, the original Pixel Fold and the Pixel Tablet, look for build CP3A.261005.002.A1.
Google’s notes list three bug fixes this month, and none of them apply to the oldest supported models:
- Keyboard: the on-screen keyboard sometimes failed to pop up when tapping a search box (Pixel 8 through Pixel 11).
- Audio: some internet calls produced crackling or distortion in the ringtone (Pixel 8 through Pixel 10a).
- Camera orientation: a few photos and videos were saved sideways or upside down (Pixel 11 series only).
For a Pixel 6 owner, this release is all about the October 1, 2026 security patch, the last one guaranteed before Pixel 6 updates end.
When Pixel 6 updates end, and which models follow
Google’s Pixel update policy gives the Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a, 7, 7 Pro, 7a and the first Pixel Fold five years of Android and security updates, counted from the month each one first went on sale at the US Google Store. Its availability chart puts both Pixel 6 models in October 2021, which is why this month is the five-year mark.
Here is how that schedule plays out for the rest of the older lineup. The right-hand column is simply five years added to Google’s listed launch month:
| Phone | First on sale (US) | Support runs to about |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel 6 and 6 Pro | October 2021 | October 2026 |
| Pixel 6a | July 2022 | July 2027 |
| Pixel 7 and 7 Pro | October 2022 | October 2027 |
| Pixel 7a | May 2023 | May 2028 |
| Pixel Fold (first model) | June 2023 | June 2028 |
| Pixel 8 | October 2023 | October 2030 (7-year policy) |
Google moved the Pixel 8 and later models to a seven-year promise, so a replacement bought today gets a far longer runway.
What we still don’t know
Google lists launch months rather than exact days, so the precise day Pixel 6 updates end is unclear, and the company has not said whether a November patch is coming. With the five-year mark falling this month, the October build could very well be the final one. We would plan as if it is, and treat any later patch as a bonus.
Google has not announced any extension beyond five years either.
What to do before Pixel 6 updates end
- Install the October patch now. Open Settings, tap System, then Software update. The same screen shows your current Android version and security patch level.
- Keep your apps current. App updates from the Play Store still matter, even when the operating system no longer gets fixes.
- Back up photos and messages. If the phone is going to be retired, this is the calm moment to make sure nothing is stuck on it.
- Decide who uses it. Once Pixel 6 updates end, the phone makes more sense as a music player or a kid’s offline game device than as the place where you do banking.

Frequently asked questions about Pixel 6 support
Is the Pixel 6 still getting security updates?
Yes, for now. The October 2026 patch is rolling out to the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, but it marks the end of Google’s five-year window, and no later patch has been promised.
Can I still use a Pixel 6 after updates end?
Yes. The phone keeps working, but new security flaws will not be patched, so it is a better fit for low-risk tasks than for banking or work email.
How long will the Pixel 7 get updates?
Google promises five years from launch, and the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro first went on sale in October 2022, which points to support running until around October 2027.
Should you replace your Pixel 6 now?
If the Pixel 6 is anyone’s main phone, especially one used for banking, school accounts or two-factor codes, start planning a replacement this season, since Pixel 6 updates end with this cycle. Owners of a Pixel 6a or Pixel 7 can relax for another year or so. Five years of patches was a fair run, and retiring the phone on your own schedule beats doing it after something goes wrong.
