Excel Copy Paste Not Working on Your PC? Here Is What to Try

Copying a row in Excel used to be the one job you never had to think about. Since September’s security update for Excel 2016, the paste step can simply do nothing: the original cells stay selected, the destination stays unchanged, and you get no beep or error. If you are seeing excel copy paste not working on your PC, the fastest answers are a newer build or Paste Special.

Microsoft’s October update, KB5002934, is now at build 16.0.5574.1006, which it says fixes paste failures in workbooks with conditional formatting. That fix covers only one edition of Excel, so start by working out which edition sits on your computer.

Why excel copy paste not working keeps coming back

This bug has already had three chapters, and each one arrived inside an Excel 2016 update.

DateUpdateWhat happened to paste
September 8, 2026KB5002914Security update that could make paste fail with no warning
September 16, 2026KB5002665Fixed that failure, though an earlier version still broke on conditional formatting
October 13, 2026KB5002934Build 16.0.5574.1005 brought the conditional formatting problem back; build 16.0.5574.1006 fixes it

Microsoft’s own word in the KB5002934 notes is “reintroduced,” which explains why plenty of people thought the problem was behind them. Many readers describe this as excel copy paste not working after windows update, and that makes sense: with automatic updating on, these patches install through Microsoft Update without you opening anything in Excel.

Which Excel versions Microsoft says are affected

The notes apply to the Windows Installer (MSI) edition of Excel 2016. Microsoft says they skip Click-to-Run copies like Microsoft Office 365 Home, so if you have excel copy paste not working on a subscription, these patches are not the cause.

To check yours, open Excel, go to File, then Account, and choose About Excel for the full version number. If your copy is a different older release, our look at Office 2021 reaching end of support explains what that means at home.

Users have reported similar paste trouble in Excel 2019 and Excel 2021 on Microsoft’s community forum, including one case right after adding conditional formatting. Microsoft’s update notes do not cover those versions, so treat those reports as unconfirmed and go straight to steps 3 through 6 below.

Six fixes for excel copy paste not working, easiest first

  1. Use Paste Special. On the Home tab, open the Paste dropdown list, select Paste Special, then pick Values or Formulas. This is the workaround Microsoft lists in its KB5002665 notes. Users have reported that pressing Ctrl+Alt+V, then V or F, gets you there from the keyboard.
  2. Install the newest build. On MSI Excel 2016, anything older than 16.0.5574.1006 is worth replacing. Get KB5002934 through Microsoft Update, or download it from the Microsoft Update Catalog, then restart Windows and test again.
  3. Test the conditional formatting. Because those rules are the known trigger, make a copy of the workbook first. In the copy, choose Home, Conditional Formatting, Clear Rules, Clear Rules from Entire Sheet, then try the paste again. This strips the colored highlighting, so never do it to your only copy.
  4. Close your web browsers. Microsoft says browsers can conflict with Paste Special, so shut every browser window you have open and retry.
  5. Start Excel in Safe Mode. Keep Ctrl pressed while you double-click Excel’s icon, then click Yes. You can also press the Windows logo key and R, type excel /safe and click OK. If paste works here, an add-in is the likely culprit: turn them back on one at a time and leave the troublemaker disabled.
  6. Check the paste setting. Open File, then Options, then Advanced, and find the Cut, copy and paste section. Tick Show Paste Options button when content is pasted.

What Microsoft has said, and what it has not

Microsoft has owned the failure in each set of notes, and it says the current October build carries all the Excel 2016 security updates along with the paste repair. It has not explained why conditional formatting keeps tripping up paste, and its notes do not say whether newer one-time-purchase versions are involved.

One line matters more than the rest. Office 2016 left support on October 14, 2025, and Microsoft says any further updates come at its sole discretion, so nobody can promise a patch for the next glitch.

Skip the temptation to uninstall anything, even if excel copy paste not working has eaten your whole afternoon. These updates close remote code execution flaws in Excel, and rolling back gives up that protection just to get Ctrl+V working. Frequently asked questions about Excel paste failures

Why is excel copy paste not working after an update?

On Excel 2016, the likely cause is a recent update: KB5002914 in September and the first October build both caused paste failures. Installing build 16.0.5574.1006 of KB5002934 is the fix Microsoft points to.

Does the Excel 2016 paste bug affect Microsoft 365?

Not according to Microsoft’s notes, which say these updates skip Click-to-Run copies like Microsoft Office 365 Home. Add-ins or browser conflicts can still block pasting there.

Should I uninstall KB5002934?

No. It is a security update for Excel 2016, and the newer build already includes the paste repair, so keep it and confirm you are on 16.0.5574.1006.

Should you keep patching Excel 2016 or plan a move?

If you bought Excel 2016 outright, install build 16.0.5574.1006 today and keep Paste Special handy. Microsoft 365 subscribers can skip the patch hunt and start with add-ins and browsers. And if excel copy paste not working was the push you needed, take it: software past its support date can still surprise you, and the next surprise may not come with a repair.
