Office 2021 Hits End of Support: What It Means for Families

Tuesday, October 13, 2026, is the final day of Office 2021 end of support, five years after the suite went on sale on October 5, 2021. If you bought Word, Excel and PowerPoint as a one-time purchase for the family PC, the question on your mind is probably simple: “Will my Office still open tomorrow?”

The short version is that Microsoft is ending the updates, not flipping an off switch. According to Microsoft’s lifecycle notice, retired products get no new security updates, no bug fixes and no help from Microsoft support after the cutoff. Nothing in that notice says the apps will refuse to launch.

Which Office 2021 versions lose support

The retirement covers every retail edition sold to homes and small businesses, on both Windows and Mac. Microsoft’s Office 2021 lifecycle page lists the same date for all of them.

Standalone 2021 apps bought on their own, such as Word 2021, Excel 2021, Outlook 2021 or Visio 2021, retire on the same day.

What Office 2021 end of support changes on your PC

On day one, probably nothing you can see. Your documents stay where they are, and the apps you installed will look the same tomorrow morning.

The risk builds slowly. Any security hole found in the 2021 apps from now on will stay open, and that matters most for whoever in the house opens email attachments from teachers, sports clubs or unfamiliar senders.

There is a second, quieter catch for anyone who signs in to a work or school Microsoft 365 account inside Outlook 2021 or the other apps. Microsoft says older Office versions may still connect to Microsoft 365 services, but that connection is no longer supported, and newer features or reliability can slip over time. Office 2016 and 2019 went through the same change in October 2023.

Your options after Office 2021

Families have three realistic paths, and the right one depends on how much the household leans on Office.

  • Move to Office 2024. This is the current one-time purchase, sold as Office Home 2024 and Office Home and Business 2024 for Windows and Mac. Microsoft supports it until October 10, 2029, so you get roughly three more years before facing this decision again.
  • Switch to a Microsoft 365 subscription. Subscription versions are always kept up to date and stay supported, which removes end-of-support dates from your life entirely. Our look at recent Microsoft 365 Family storage changes covers what the family plan includes now.
  • Keep using Office 2021 for a while. For a laptop that only types the occasional letter and rarely opens attachments from strangers, this is a defensible short-term choice, as long as Windows and your antivirus stay current.

The Office 2021 end of support lands on the same day that Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro stop getting updates, so this is a good week to check both. A PC that is behind on Windows and running retired Office is carrying two sets of unpatched software.

What Microsoft has not spelled out

Microsoft’s retirement notice lists what stops, but it does not describe how long Office 2021 will keep activating on a new or reset PC, and it does not mention any discount for moving 2021 owners to Office 2024. If you plan to reinstall Windows soon, keep your Office product key and Microsoft account details handy before you start.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still use Office 2021 after October 13, 2026?

Yes. Microsoft’s notice lists the end of updates and support, not a shutdown, so your installed apps should keep opening. They just will not receive security fixes anymore.

Does Office 2021 end of support include Mac?

Yes. Office Home and Student 2021 for Mac and Office Home and Business 2021 for Mac retire on the same day as the Windows editions.

What replaces Office 2021?

The current one-time purchase is Office 2024, supported until October 10, 2029. A Microsoft 365 subscription is the other option and stays continuously updated.

Should families upgrade before Office 2021 end of support bites?

If Office lives on a shared family computer where kids open school attachments, plan a move to Office 2024 or Microsoft 365 within the next few months rather than years. If it sits on a lightly used laptop, you can wait, but treat Office 2021 end of support as the start of a countdown, not a deadline you already missed. Old software rarely breaks loudly; it just stops getting help.
