For two years, a home PC on Windows 11 version 24H2 quietly picked up a fresh round of security fixes every month. Starting this week, that safety net is gone. The Windows 11 24H2 end of support date for Home and Pro editions is Tuesday, October 13, 2026, and that day’s Patch Tuesday release is the last one this version gets.
Your laptop will not stop booting on Wednesday. It just stops getting protection against new threats. The job this week is a quick check: find your version and, if it says 24H2, move up.
What windows 11 24h2 end of support actually switches off
Microsoft’s 24H2 status page lists four things that disappear after the cutoff: monthly security and preview updates, fixes for known bugs, time zone updates and technical support. Nothing gets uninstalled, and apps keep working.
The risk builds slowly. Each month after windows 11 24h2 end of support, an unpatched PC falls further behind the security holes attackers already use.
Which Windows 11 versions are still covered
Each yearly Home or Pro release gets about 24 months of updates. Here is the schedule from Microsoft’s Home and Pro lifecycle page:
| Version | Released | Home and Pro updates end |
|---|---|---|
| 24H2 | October 1, 2024 | October 13, 2026 |
| 25H2 | September 30, 2025 | October 12, 2027 |
| 26H2 | September 29, 2026 | October 2028 |
Work computers are on a different clock. The Enterprise and Education editions of 24H2 keep receiving updates until October 2027, so the windows 11 24h2 end of support deadline this week applies to the Home and Pro editions most families own.
One group has nowhere newer to go. Microsoft says Windows 11 SE edition tops out at 24H2, with no later version supported. If a child’s school laptop runs SE, the school’s IT team is the right contact, not Windows Update.
How to check your version and move off 24H2
Plenty of PCs may already have moved on. Home edition cannot defer feature updates, so Microsoft says it usually receives a newer version before the deadline, and unmanaged Home and Pro machines are scheduled to upgrade on their own. You only pick when the restart happens, or delay it for a while.
To beat the windows 11 24h2 end of support date yourself:
- Press the Windows key, type winver and press Enter. The small window that opens shows your version number.
- If it reads 24H2, open Settings > Windows Update.
- Turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available. Version 26H2 is offered to eligible 24H2 and 25H2 machines with this switch enabled.
- Select Check for updates, then choose the download and install option when it appears.
- Save your work and let the PC restart. Microsoft says a single restart finishes the job for PCs already on 24H2 or 25H2.
Microsoft ships 26H2 to these PCs as a quick servicing update, not a full reinstall. A recent backup is still smart. If you lean on OneDrive for that, our look at how much Microsoft 365 Family storage is shrinking is worth a read first.
The rollout is phased, so 26H2 may not appear for every PC right away. Landing on 25H2 also clears the windows 11 24h2 end of support problem, since it is covered for another year.
Windows 11 26H2 known issues to watch for
Microsoft tracks open bugs on its 26H2 release health page. Two could touch a family PC, and neither is a reason to stay put:
- Older USB audio gear. Some headsets and adapters using the USB Audio Class 1.0 standard may show a Code 10 error in Device Manager or play no sound. Microsoft has mitigated it and promises a full fix later.
- Apps that rely on Dolby Digital decoding. Mostly older games, media players and some productivity apps that lean on the AC-3 decoder built into Windows may crash or refuse to start. This one began with the September 22 update and also hits 24H2 and 25H2, so staying put does not avoid it.
What Microsoft has not spelled out
Microsoft’s 24H2 notice still names 25H2 as the automatic upgrade, even though 26H2 is now out. It has not said which one PCs that miss the cutoff will get. Either is a supported build, and Microsoft’s lifecycle pages list no extended security option for 24H2 Home and Pro.
Frequently asked questions about the 24H2 cutoff
What happens when Windows 11 24H2 reaches end of life?
Your PC keeps working, but it stops receiving monthly security updates, bug fixes, time zone updates and technical support from Microsoft. Moving to 25H2 or 26H2 restores all of that.
Is there extended support for Windows 11 24H2?
Not for Home and Pro. Microsoft’s lifecycle pages list no extension for those editions, so updating to a newer version is the only way to keep getting fixes.
Is the Windows 11 24H2 end of life date different for Enterprise?
Yes. Enterprise and Education editions of 24H2 keep receiving updates until October 2027, a year after Home and Pro.
Should you let your PC jump to 26H2 this week?
If winver says 24H2, yes. The windows 11 24h2 end of support date is Tuesday, October 13, the upgrade takes one restart, and the known bugs are either being fixed or already affect 24H2 anyway. Anyone already on 25H2 can relax and let the rollout come to them. One restart today beats a year of unpatched browsing later.
