Gmail’s AI writing assistant may soon sit right inside every new email you start, which means more taps, more prompts and more chances to send something that does not sound like you. If you would rather keep your messages fully your own, you can turn off help me write in gmail with one quick settings change on a computer.
The catch is that Google does not offer a single switch labeled for this one tool. The control lives inside a broader setting that also affects a few other conveniences, so it pays to know what you are giving up before you flip it.
What may change with Gmail’s writing prompt
Right now on Android, the Gemini drafting tool appears when you tap its button at the top right of the compose screen or use a swipe gesture. Code spotted by Android Authority in Gmail app version 2026.10.05 suggests Google wants to make it faster: a “Describe your message” box could appear at the bottom of the composer by default, drop the draft straight into your email, and offer tone choices plus undo and redo buttons.
None of that is confirmed. Google has not announced the redesign or a date, and features found in app code sometimes never ship. Still, a prompt box in every new message is the kind of change that makes people want to turn off help me write in gmail, so here is how the controls work today.
Who has help me write in Gmail right now
Not everyone sees the feature. According to Google’s Gmail Help page on drafting with Gemini, availability depends on the account type:
| Account type | Where it works | Language |
|---|---|---|
| Personal Google Account | United States only | Supported languages |
| Eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan | Worldwide | Several supported languages |
On a phone, your device language also has to be supported. If you are outside the US on a personal account, there is likely nothing for you to turn off.
How to turn off help me write in gmail on the web
Google groups its Gemini drafting tools under a setting called Smart features in Google Workspace. Here is the path on a computer:
- Open Gmail in your web browser and sign in.
- Click the gear icon at the top right, then choose See all settings.
- Stay on the General tab and scroll to the section called Google Workspace smart features.
- Click Manage Workspace smart feature settings.
- Switch off Smart features in Google Workspace, then click Save at the lower right.
Google says the change carries over to every device where you are signed in.
What else switches off with it
This part matters. Before you turn off help me write in gmail this way, know that the same toggle also controls a few features many families lean on:
- Flight bookings, invitations and similar events from Gmail showing up in Google Calendar
- Personalized search results in Google Drive
- Other Gemini tools such as content summaries
If your household relies on trip confirmations landing in the shared calendar automatically, you will lose that.
Leave the other box alone. Elsewhere on the same General tab sits a separate checkbox, “Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet.” That one handles inbox categories like Primary and Promotions, Smart Compose, Smart Reply and summary cards. You do not need to uncheck it to turn off help me write in gmail, and doing so would also switch off your inbox tabs.
Turning it off from the Gmail app on your phone
Google says these controls can also be changed in the Gmail app on Android, iPhone and iPad, but its help page does not spell out the mobile menu path. The easiest way to turn off help me write in gmail from a phone is to make the change once in a browser and let it sync.
If the button still shows up in the app afterward, update Gmail from the Play Store or App Store. Google notes that some changes made on the web can take a while to reach the mobile app.
Hoping to turn off help me write in gmail on one phone but keep it on a work laptop? That is not possible, because the setting belongs to the account, not the device.
If you keep it: how to use help me write in Gmail well
The tool can be handy for awkward notes, like a polite nudge to a contractor. On a computer, you type a request into the prompt bar at the bottom of a new message (or click the Help me write button if the bar is hidden) and click Create. You can then type a follow-up instruction or click Formalize, Friendly or Shorten, and the Undo and Redo buttons let you flip between versions.
On Android, tap Help me write in a new message, enter your request, tap Create, then Insert. One gotcha: tapping Recreate gives you a fresh version, and Google says you cannot go back to the earlier one.
Google suggests naming the person, the topic and what you need, plus a tone word. A request like “Write a friendly note to my son’s soccer coach saying he will miss Saturday’s game and asking about a make-up practice” will get far closer than “email coach.”
Read every draft before sending. Google warns that Gemini can get things wrong, and it should never stand in for medical, legal or financial advice.
What Gemini reads when it writes for you
To personalize a draft, the tool can pull details from your other emails and your Google Drive files. A Sources button under the draft shows which items it used, and Google says that information is used only for this feature.
For some families, that is reason enough to turn off help me write in gmail, especially on an account where tax documents or medical paperwork live in Drive. It is the same kind of choice covered in our guide on how to turn off Gemini in Chrome. If you are tightening up your account in general, setting up a Google passkey on your phone or computer is a worthwhile next step.
One more note: Google ships these settings switched off by default for people in the UK, Switzerland, Japan and the European Economic Area.
Frequently asked questions
Why is help me write greyed out in Gmail?
Google’s advice is to wait and try again later, since the button can be temporarily unavailable. If it never works, check that your account type, country and device language are supported.
Can I turn off help me write in the Gmail app only?
No. The setting is tied to your Google account, so switching it off applies to every device where you are signed in.
Will turning off help me write stop Smart Compose?
Not if you leave the separate ‘Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet’ box checked. That box controls Smart Compose, Smart Reply and inbox categories.
Should you turn off help me write in Gmail?
If you never use the tool and the calendar shortcuts do not matter to you, turn off help me write in gmail now and enjoy a quieter compose window before any redesign arrives. If flight confirmations flowing into the family calendar save you real hassle, leave the setting on and just skip the prompt. A writing helper is only helpful when it is one you chose to invite in.
